Activities
The ancient Round Kirk at the Bu'

There are virtually endless opportunities for outdoor activities. The following list is far from complete but gives a good taste of what is on offer: -

  • Walking and cycling - there are a number of good shoreline and hillside walks in the vicinity and the area is well frequented by cyclists. For adventure further afield and/or daytrips, there is the added advantage of fast and frequent access by ferry to the nearby islands of Flotta and Hoy.

  • Nature - Houton Bay seal colony is on the doorstep, and the RSPB Hobbister Bird Reserve is nearby.
  •

  • Historic sites - we are close to the ancient Round Kirk and Orkneyinga Saga Centre at Orphir, and within easy access of many of the other major historical sites on mainland Orkney.

  • Diving - Dive boats head out daily from Stromness to explore the wrecks of Scapa Flow. Often these vessels call in at Houton Bay during the day.

  • Towns - A brief drive or bus journey will take you to the major towns of Kirkwall and Stromness, for a shopping trip, sports, cinema, and theatre or just a day or night out.

Houton Bay Lodge is an ideal base for visiting Skara Brae, Standing Stones, Maeshowe and the many other archaeological sites throughout Orkney mainland.
